WHAT IS MINDFUL DISCOVERY?
Mindful Discovery is a class created by Ms. Scott to help students learn different mindfulness themes which allow them to cope with the stress and anxiety of everyday life. It is created specifically for teenagers but can be used by almost anyone! This class started in 2017 and has become a very popular class for teens. This class is currently be offered for PE credit and runs on both a semester and J-term (18 day) schedule.
Weekly Agenda: Each week students are introduced to a mindfulness theme. This theme is taught throughout the week. At the beginning of each week, students come in and get a number (1-4). This number gets them in groups for their TEA TALK. The tea talk happens the first 5 minutes of class, on the board there is a tea talk topic for discussion and a quote of the day. The students are encouraged to grab tea and begin discussing the topic with their peers. After 5 minutes, students sit down and a whole class discussion occurs about the tea talk topic and the quote of the day. Then the students are split into 2 groups based on their numbers, one group of students will begin their YOGA LESSON (15-20 minutes) while the other group of students are with Ms. Scott going over the DAILY MINDFULNESS LESSON on the theme. The lesson typically takes 5-10 minutes and the rest of the time is spent on a MINDFUL EXERCISE such as journaling, coloring, reading, or one of the many other activities provided. The groups then swaps. Finally, the group comes back together for a short GUIDED MEDITATION (5-15 minutes).
